Pictures, Poetry, and a Book Review.

A dear friend and fellow blogger, Clarice, kindly sent my mom and me a copy of her new book, Wren Bay.

I have spent several days curled up in front of the wood stove, reading it.
~
Wren Bay is a newly married bride, whose husband, Devin, has gone off to war leaving her at his childhood home, that once belonged to his parents, now deceased.

As she goes through her days, missing Devin, growing accustom to her new home, and making new friends with the caretaker, his wife, and their family, Wren finds joy and busy-ness in the household chores, the garden, and her kitchen.

This is a book beautifully written, filled with delicious recipes, helpful homemaking hints, and inspiring things such as, gardening and herbs, warm summer days, house dresses, hats, cooking , cleaning and homemaking .
~
Clarice's writing style reminds me of that of Grace Livingston Hill, or Miss Read, two of my favorite authors.

Wren Bay is a book to be read slowly, savored with a cup of tea, curled up in a big chair, ready to be taken to the world of Wren and inspired by her efforts.

Below are some pictures of homestead happenings, here at the farm.

Outside rainy days.

"November comes And November goes,
With the last red berries And the first white snows.
With night coming early, And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket And frost by the gate.
The fires burn And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest Until next spring."

"A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air."

  6. Oh, I am jealous (not a Christian thing to be, you know). I do want to read Clarice's book. :)

I heard a Christian movie reviewer talk about the new Narnia movie this past week. He says it is "just as good or perhaps even better" than what they did with the first.

It doesn't seem possible so many years have gone by since my husband read through the Narnia books with his "little girl"... who now reads them to her five children. Dawn Treader was a favorite of hers.

Love your blog! Miss your mum, too. :)

  7. I agree Rosie...it is a book that needs to be read slowly and to truly see that the happiness she is finding comes from the joy of taken care of her home.

The book is like Grace Livingston Hill...the detail in the writing is so enjoyable.

    Thank you for sharing...

    M.

May I ask what you're sewing? I'm needing to make myself some new dresses but have been dragging my feet because I don't enjoy the cutting out part. ;-)
    Have a blessed week!

  12. Rosie,

This is my first time visiting your blog, and I think it's absolutely lovely! :)

Your book review of "Wren Bay" sounds like an interesting read. I have so many books that I have begun to read, that to take on another one would be a bit "foolish" on my part. However, I will be sure to put this book on my "Wish List" of books to read for the future.

Anyway, I am sure to come by and visit your lovely piece of the blogsphere again. You are welcomed to visit my blog if you wish. :)

    Blessings,

    -Lady Rose
