~Fall Walking~

"To get to Croston Heath, Molly had to go down a narrow lane overshadowed by trees, with picturesque old cottages dotted here and there on the steep sandy banks;
and then there came a small wood, and then there was a brook to be crossed on a plank-bridge,
and up the steeper fields on the opposite side were cut steps in the turfy path, which ended, she was on Croston Heath, a wide-stretching common skirted by labourers' dwellings, past which a near road to Hollingford lay.

The loneliest part of the road was the first - the lane, the wood, the little bridge, and the clambering through the upland fields. But Molly cared little for loneliness.
She went along the lane under the over-arching elm-branches, from which, here and there, a yellow leaf came floating down upon her very dress......."

Elizabeth Gaskell
~"To walk three miles, or four miles, or five miles, or whatever it is, above her ankles in dirt, and alone, quite alone!
What could she mean by it?
It seems to me to show an abominable sort of conceited independ
ence, a most country-town indifference to decorum."

  2. I love the early morning walk in the fall, then the ground is frosty and the sun is coming up making the colour of the maple trees seem to vibrant. Wives and Daughters is my favourite movie. Enjoyed the quote.

  3. This is the time of year I love to be outside and walk.

    Love both of those movies, have read Pride and Prejudice, but not Wives and Daughters.

  4. I just found your blog today and I think it is a real gem. :)

    There is an interesting contrast in those passages from two of my many favorite authors. I have not read much of Mrs. Gaskells work but Pride and Prejudice is a well worn book in my book shelf.

    Have a happy day :)
    God bless,

  5. I love walking in the fall. Cool, crisp air, bright sunshine (or mist) and to see nature in all her glory! Then to come home to a nice fire and warm your nippy nose and toes, grab a cuppa and take a sip. Fun! Much love - Raquel XOxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxooxo
